Nails are trimmed to just before quick. We recommend also having nails filed. See below. 

If nails have a lot of length to trim back, they will be trimmed first. Nails are then filed to the edge of the quick and rounded smooth. Filing nails allows us to shorten nails without feeling pressure from clippers. Nails are also shorter when filed.
